Arabella Hotel & Spa

Arabella Country Estate is one of the Western Cape's easiest "yes" venues for a golf break that needs to please everyone. You've got the Kogelberg mountains on one side, the Bot River Lagoon on the other and fynbos lining the fairways, so even the warm-up holes come with a proper postcard backdrop.

The headline act is Arabella Golf Club, a Peter Matkovich redesign that asks you to think your way round rather than just lash driver. Often ranked among South Africa's very best resort courses, it's a layout that rewards accuracy and course management over brute force. When the wind gets up off the lagoon, you'll be glad you packed a few extra shots in the bag. If you're planning a South African golf holiday, Arabella is a strong option for golfers who want a top-class resort set-up with a genuinely memorable course attached.

Off the course, the estate has the full luxury-resort feel, with a well-regarded spa, quality dining and plenty to do if your group includes non-golfers. In short, it's a venue that works for couples, mixed-ability groups and anyone who wants to combine serious golf with a proper switch-off setting.

Who is this for? Couples and small groups who want a high-end Western Cape base where golf, spa time and good dining all sit on the same site, with minimal running around.

Who is it best for? Golfers who enjoy a strategic test in coastal conditions, plus mixed groups where not everyone wants 36 holes a day.

Arabella Golf Club

In 1998, the golf course opened to the public, and it has since become a firm favourite. By moving a significant volume of earth, Matkovich was able to route the golf course around the shores of Bot River Lagoon, providing not only aesthetic satisfaction, but also adding to the charm and challenge.

At approximately 7,000 yards, Arabella is a stern test, but is by no means unmanageable for the average resort guest. The manicured fairways and greens are a stunning juxtaposition to the rough wasteland areas that Matkovich left as a reminder of the course's foundations. The architect has succeeded in perfectly assimilating his golf course into the surroundings, and has also succeeded in presenting Arabella with one of South Africa's premier golf courses.

Accommodation at Arabella Hotel & Spa

The Arabella Hotel delivers the five-star resort experience you'd expect at a Luxury Collection property, with a calm, nature-led look that mirrors the estate's setting around the lagoon and Kogelberg Reserve. Rooms lean into soft, natural colours and plenty of light, with space to spread out after a long day on the course.

Service is a big part of the appeal here. For golf groups, the hotel team are used to the rhythm of a golf trip, helping with early breakfasts, tee time logistics and those small details that make everything feel effortless. The concierge can arrange club storage, buggy hire and anything else you need without fuss.

If relaxation is on the agenda, the AltiraSPA is the obvious highlight. Treatments blend different approaches and are ideal post-round, especially if you've walked 18 in the coastal breeze. The spa offers everything from deep-tissue sports massages to hydrotherapy sessions, all delivered by therapists who know how to work out the knots from a day on the course. There are also additional resort facilities, including tennis courts, walking trails through the estate and boat trips on the lagoon, plus easy options for non-golfers who want to stay active or simply enjoy the estate.

Food and drink are another strong point. The Premier Restaurant is the smart choice for a special evening, particularly if you can time it with the best lagoon views. The menu focuses on contemporary cuisine with local ingredients and Cape wines, and the setting makes every meal feel like an occasion. For something more casual, the clubhouse is ideal for a quick bite and a drink after your round. Later on, Cristobal's Cigar Lounge is a classic "one more nightcap" spot, a wood-panelled space with leather seating and a well-stocked whisky list, especially for groups who like a quieter, grown-up end to the day.

Generally good but getting service in room was a challenge. No phone list in room and took several calls and quite a delay just to get wine glasses. Golf facilities very good but hotel service needs some work
