Bundoran Golf Club

Bundoran Golf Club sits on a dramatic clifftop headland jutting into Donegal Bay, just five minutes' walk from the town centre and right on the Wild Atlantic Way. Established in 1894, this par 70 links was designed by six-time Open champion Harry Vardon, who believed a great course should "give pleasure to golfers of all degrees of ability".

At 5,338 yards from the yellow tees it looks short on the card, but don't be fooled. Firm, fast greens and plenty of exposure mean the wind has a big say, and it rewards players who can flight the ball and think their way round rather than simply hit it hard.

The setting is a huge part of the appeal. With the Dartry Mountains behind and the bay in front, you'll often spot seals in the water below, and on a big swell you can see surfers working the breaks beneath the cliffs. The Roguey Walk runs alongside the course too, so there's always a bit of life and atmosphere around the place.

If you're building a north-west links trip, Bundoran is a genuine, old-school stop that's easy to reach, easy to walk and perfectly placed for post-round food and a pint in town.

Who is this for?

Golfers or groups looking for an authentic, old-school links test on the Wild Atlantic Way, with easy access to a lively seaside town and some of Ireland's most dramatic coastal scenery.

Who is it best for?

Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy strategic, wind-affected golf and appreciate classic design, plus anyone building a links tour of Donegal and Sligo who wants variety, often better value than some of the headline names, and a course that rewards thought over length.

Bundoran Golf Club

Vardon's routing makes smart use of a narrow strip of linksland, and the key here is positioning. You don't need to hit driver everywhere, but you do need to pick the right side of the fairway to open up approaches into small, firm greens. When it's calm you'll fancy a few chances. Once the breeze turns, keeping the ball down becomes the skill that saves shots.

A good tip is to treat it like a proper links day out: take one more club, swing within yourself and aim for safer targets. Misses can run away quickly on tight turf, and if you short-side yourself you'll be playing delicate chips from firm lies with the wind in your face. The greens are true and quick, typical of proper links turf, and they're small enough that approach play matters more than driving distance.

Several holes run right along the cliff edge, with the Roguey Walk below and surfers visible in the breaks when the swell's up. The views are stunning, the Dartry Mountains form a dramatic backdrop inland, and seals are a regular sight in the bay. I'll be honest, if there's a stiff breeze, it's one of those places where par feels like you've earned your dinner.

Logistics are simple. It's a five-minute walk from the centre of Bundoran, which makes it ideal for societies who want easy transfers and a lively base. If your group has mixed handicaps, it's also a nice change of pace on a Donegal itinerary, more about craft and control than brute length.

If you want classic links golf in a spectacular spot, without the bucket-list price point, Bundoran is well worth including on a north-west loop.
