Cameron House

Perched on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, Cameron House is a luxurious 17th-century baronial estate that sits precisely where Scotland's Highlands meet the Lowlands. The setting alone is worth the trip, breathtaking views across the loch and into the Trossachs, but it's the combination of championship golf, five-star-standard facilities and genuine Scottish heritage that makes this one of the best golf resorts in the United Kingdom.

Since opening in 2007, The Carrick has quickly earned a reputation as one of Scotland's standout modern resort courses, helped by strong conditioning, serious views and a layout that's hosted the Scottish Ladies Open and the PGA Cup. Designed by Canadian architect Doug Carrick, this par-71 championship layout follows traditional Scottish heathland style while straddling two distinct landscapes, rolling Lowlands on one side, majestic Highland terrain on the other. It's a rare combination, and the course has proved it can handle elite competition.

And when you're not on the course, you've got plenty to keep the group happy, from the rooftop infinity pool to loch-side dining. Cameron House offers an acclaimed spa with views overlooking the course, top-tier dining with loch views, a 234-berth marina, a 29-seat private cinema and a modern leisure club. Whether you're here for a serious golf trip, a couples' break combining golf and spa, or a family escape with activities for everyone, the estate delivers.

Right, if you're weighing this up for a UK golf break, the big win is how 'all-in' it feels. You can land at Glasgow, be checked in and still have time to get a warm-up in before dinner. And because you're in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, you've got proper scenery between shots, not just a pretty hotel garden. If Cameron House is on your shortlist, it's a cracking option for a 2 or 3-night Scotland golf break where the golf feels 'big' but the logistics stay easy.

Who is this for? Golfers seeking a high-quality Scottish break that pairs a genuine championship test with luxury accommodation, spa facilities and stunning natural scenery. Ideal for couples, small groups, societies and anyone wanting to tick off a modern classic in one of Scotland's most iconic settings.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who'll appreciate the strategic challenge and variety of The Carrick, plus anyone who values a full resort experience, excellent dining and the chance to explore Loch Lomond National Park between rounds. Also suits time-poor planners and groups wanting on-site facilities, with the bonus that the course drains well year-round.

The Carrick Course

Cameron House, The Carrick Course

The Carrick is one of Scotland's finest modern championship courses, and arguably the most visually stunning round you'll play in the country. Designed by Canadian architect Doug Carrick and opened in 2007, the par-71 layout sits within Scotland's first National Park and follows a traditional Scottish heathland style, bordered by banks of heather and gorse that define the classic Highland landscape.

What makes The Carrick different is the way it straddles the Lowlands and Highlands. You'll start on broader, more open ground, then climb into a more dramatic back nine where the views of Loch Lomond really kick in. It rewards sensible course management, but it's still playable if you keep it in play. And thanks to modern construction, it drains well, which is one reason it's been trusted with events like the Scottish Ladies Open and the PGA Cup.

The signature hole is the par-3 14th, Tappet Doon, which plays 199 yards from an elevated tee 60 feet above the green. The tee shot is framed by loch views, and the green is surrounded by five bunkers, making club selection and execution critical. It's a daunting prospect, but it's also one of the most memorable par-3s in Scotland.

Keep your eyes open for the wildlife. Loch Lomond is home to kingfishers, oystercatchers, great crested grebes, lapwings and otters, all of which you're likely to spot during your round.

Par: 71

Designed by: Doug Carrick

Opened: 2007

Previously hosted: Scottish Ladies Open (2007, 2008), PGA Cup (2009)

Tees:

Black: 7,082 yards, SSS 74

White: 6,729 yards, SSS 72

Gold: 6,265 yards, SSS 70

Burgundy: 5,380 yards, SSS 71

Blue: 5,079 yards, SSS 64

Signature hole, No. 14 (Tappet Doon): Par 3, 199 yards, SI 17

The Carrick's signature 14th offers magnificent views over Loch Lomond from a tee perched 60 feet above the green. The tee shot is played to a well-protected green surrounded by five bunkers, a daunting prospect that demands precision and nerve in equal measure.

Accommodation at Cameron House

Following a major renovation of the historic baronial mansion, Cameron House Hotel now offers 208 bedrooms, including 28 suites, all finished to a high luxury standard. The rooms blend period charm with contemporary comfort, and many feature views across Loch Lomond or the surrounding parkland. Rooms are spacious and contemporary, and many include loch or parkland views. You'll typically find king or twin configurations, smart modern bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi, plus thoughtful touches that reflect the estate's heritage.

For golfers, the layout is ideal. The Carrick clubhouse sits a short walk or buggy ride from the main hotel, and the resort's compact footprint means you're never far from your room, the spa or the restaurants. After a round, you can head straight to the rooftop infinity pool at Cameron Spa, which overlooks the golf course and offers 17 treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room and bubble pool. The spa is part of the Cameron Club, giving hotel guests full access throughout their stay.

If you've got non-golfers (or kids) in the group, the Leisure Club is a real plus. It features an 18-metre swimming pool, a family pool with waterslide and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views of the Trossachs. There's also a 29-seat cinema on-site, perfect for winding down in the evening.

Dining is a highlight. Tambourrinni & Wishart serves modern, creative cuisine with panoramic loch views, while The Boat House Restaurant sits right on the water's edge and specialises in fresh Scottish seafood. For something more relaxed, The Clubhouse at The Carrick offers classic dishes and a welcoming atmosphere after your round. All three venues make the most of locally sourced ingredients, and the bars provide a comfortable setting for a post-golf pint or pre-dinner drink.

The resort also includes a 234-berth marina, and guests can arrange boat trips, water sports or simply explore the loch shoreline. Cameron House is located just off the A82, 20 minutes from Glasgow International Airport and five minutes from Balloch Rail Station, making it one of the most accessible luxury golf resorts in Scotland.
