Castle Dargan Hotel, Golf & Spa

Darren Clarke had a pretty special bit of Sligo to work with at Castle Dargan. You're playing through mature woodland with natural lakes, old stone walls and historic estate ruins that make you stop for a second on the way to the next tee. It's parkland golf, but it doesn't feel manufactured, more like the holes have always belonged on the estate.

The fairways move nicely with the land, there are a few proper elevation changes and the burns that cross the property aren't just for show. They influence club choice and lines from the tee. Miss the wrong side and you'll be scrambling, even if the yardage on the card looks friendly enough. In other words, it's a thinking golfer's course where position matters more than trying to overpower it.

What I like is the variety. Some holes are framed tightly by trees, others open up and let you see the wider estate. Around the greens you'll often find water, stonework or subtle run-offs ready to punish a lazy approach. If you're building a north-west itinerary, it's also a handy counterpoint to the area's headline links. Right, you may not get sea views here, but you do get a relaxing inland test that works brilliantly as part of a multi-day break in County Sligo.

Who is this for?

Golfers planning a north-west Ireland break who want a Darren Clarke-designed parkland round, a good-value resort hotel and spa time built in, with links golf within easy reach.

Who is it best for?

Mixed-ability groups and couples who enjoy strategic parkland golf and want an easy base for a 2–4 night stay, especially if you want to blend inland golf with one or two coastal links rounds.

Castle Dargan Golf Club

Rather than imposing his ideas on the site, Clarke allowed the character of the local terrain to dictatespawning holes of amazing beauty and great challenge. County Sligo is blessed with many great championship links courses, but Clarke has sought to redress the high quality parkland layouts with Castle Dargan.

Built in accordance with USGA construction principles, the course is maintained in first class condition by an army of ground staff, and is playable for golfers of all standards. From the championship markers, Castle Dargan is around 6,800 yards, which is quite short for a modern build, but there it has enough teeth to challenge even the best.

This new star is a welcome addition to the County Sligo landscape, providing the ideal balance between the region’s array of terrific coastal courses – be sure to include Darren Clarke’s excellent course in your next escape to this charming corner of the Emerald Isle.

Accommodation at Castle Dargan Hotel, Golf & Spa

The Castle Dargan Hotel sits at the heart of the estate and ticks the boxes for a comfortable stay-and-play base. The 4-star accommodation blends traditional Irish hospitality with the kind of modern touches that matter, from quality bedding and broadband access to digital television and in-room tea and coffee. Many rooms look out over the estate, with views across the course, woodland or lakes depending on location, so you're never far from a reminder of where you are.

The Icon Spa is the standout off-course facility. It's Sligo's first destination medi-spa and centres around an extensive hydrotherapy circuit, with pools, sauna, steam rooms and sensory showers, ideal after 18 holes. If you've walked Clarke's parkland or battled the wind on one of the nearby links courses, the spa is exactly where you want to be. The treatment menu covers everything from sports massage to more indulgent options, and the whole setup is designed around recovery and relaxation rather than just ticking a box.

Dining is handled by The Hall Door, the hotel's signature restaurant, which leans heavily on local produce and particularly the seafood landed along Sligo's Atlantic coast. You'll usually find a strong seafood leaning, with local fish featuring heavily when it's in season, alongside seasonal menus and a focus on quality ingredients. For something more relaxed, the Middleton Bar overlooks the golf course and is the natural spot for a post-round pint and a chat about the day's play. The bar menu covers the essentials, the atmosphere is easy-going and the views across the 18th green give you a chance to watch other groups finish their rounds while you settle in for the evening.

Room types range from standard doubles and twins through to larger suites, all finished to the same 4-star standard with down duvets, direct-dial phones and the kind of space and comfort that makes a multi-night stay straightforward. If you're travelling as a group or society, the hotel can accommodate larger parties and offers flexible dining and meeting spaces to suit different itineraries. The estate setting, combined with the spa, dining options and proximity to both parkland and links golf, makes Castle Dargan a solid choice for golfers who want everything on-site without sacrificing access to the wider Sligo golf scene.
