Cottesmore Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Cottesmore Golf & Country Club is a proper West Sussex countryside escape, set in 247 acres of woodland and parkland with golf, accommodation and a health club all on site. If you're after an easy UK golf break where you can park up, play and unwind without faffing about with taxis, it ticks a lot of boxes.

Golf-wise, you've got 27 holes to play with, so there's enough variety for a weekend away, a society trip or a quick midweek reset. The layout is classic parkland, where position matters more than pure distance, especially when the ground's playing firm and the trees start framing your lines. It's the sort of place where you'll enjoy the golf without feeling beaten up, but you'll still need to think your way around if you want to post a decent score.

Off the course, the resort has 21 bedrooms in the hotel plus seven self-catering lodges on the estate if you want more space and a bit of independence. Add in the pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna and you've got the ideal post-round routine sorted. Food and drink is handled by the Phoenix Bar and Restaurant, which looks out across the course and leans into locally sourced produce and gastro-pub favourites. In short, it's a relaxed, rural golf base that works just as well for couples as it does for groups.

Golf Courses at Cottesmore Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Griffin Course

The Griffin Course is the premier layout at Cottesmore, and is a genuine test of both skill and strategy. The predominant characteristics are the tight fairways, guarded by the mature woodland of the estate, and the small greens. This combination demands accuracy above all else, but the relatively short length of 6,248 ensures that the Griffin is manageable for all standards of golfers. Highlights are the short second and the penultimate hole, both of which demand well-struck iron shots over water.

Phoenix Course

The neighbouring 9 Hole Phoenix Course is the smaller of the two courses and offers a great introduction to golf. Regarded as Cottesmore's ‘second course' it has a splendid layout, bordered by the rhododendrons and woodland of this stunning landscape. Although some of the holes are easier than the Griffin there are also some challenging holes to test for the more complete golfer. The Phoenix is equally well maintained and is slightly more forgiving due to its more open fairways, which results in an extremely enjoyable challenge.

Accommodation at Cottesmore Hotel, Golf & Country Club

The accommodation is based around a converted country house and former farm buildings, restored to keep a traditional, rural feel rather than going ultra-modern. There are 21 guest rooms, each individually styled, so it feels more like a character hotel than a standard chain set-up. The décor leans classic rather than contemporary, with warm tones and period touches that suit the countryside setting. If you're after boutique minimalism, this probably isn't your spot, but if you want somewhere with a bit of history and character, it works well.

If you're travelling as a fourball or a bigger group, the seven self-catering lodges are a smart option. They give you more space, a living area to spread out in and the freedom to keep your own schedule. They're also handy if you want a quieter base or you're trying to keep the costs sensible without sacrificing the golf. The lodges are positioned along the course itself, so you get direct fairway views and easy access to the first tee.

After your round, the health club is a genuine selling point. You've got a swimming pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna on site, plus a gym with cardio kit and free weights if you like to stay in rhythm while you're away. If you're the type who likes to squeeze in 36, I'll admit the health club feels like a bit of a lifesaver afterwards. The spa is worth factoring in too, particularly if you're walking 18 (or 36) and want to feel human again the next morning. The massages get good feedback, so if you're visiting as a group, it's worth booking ahead to avoid disappointment.

For food, the Phoenix Bar and Restaurant is the main hub. It's bright and relaxed, with views across the course, and the menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients with a gastro-pub style that suits a golf weekend. You'll find proper pub classics done well alongside a few more refined options, and the bar is well stocked without being over the top. My advice: book a table for the evening if you're visiting as a group, especially on busy weekend dates.

Room types:

Standard double and twin rooms in the main hotel building, all individually styled with en-suite bathrooms and traditional country-house décor. Self-catering lodges sleep between four and six guests, with full kitchens, living areas and direct course views.

Dining:

The Phoenix Bar and Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a menu built around seasonal, locally sourced produce. Expect gastro-style pub dishes, daily specials and a relaxed, informal atmosphere with panoramic views across the fairways.
