Originally founded in 1906, Fulford Golf Club moved to its current home in 1935, with the course planned and built by Major Charles MacKenzie, brother and business partner of Dr Alister MacKenzie. Just outside the historic centre of York, it's one of Yorkshire's standout heathland tests and a club that's happy to welcome visitors. It also has proper pedigree, having hosted the R&A Girls U16 Amateur Championship in 2020.
Fulford is a cracking example of classic heathland golf. The sandy base helps it drain well and, in the right conditions, you'll get that firm, running game you want from this style of course. Expect smart bunkering, gentle elevation shifts and a layout that rewards accuracy and good decisions more than sheer power. There's room from the tee if you're swinging well, but the best scores come from controlling your angles into greens that are well defended. Get out of position and you'll be relying on tidy pitching and bunker play to save par.
