Najeti Hotel Clery

Built in 1766 as General Berthier's residence during Napoleon's siege of Boulogne, the Hotel Cléry is a proper little château stay just south of Calais, set in 12 acres and raised above the Boulogne countryside. It's packed with period character, but you still get the modern comforts you'll want after a day on the course.

If you're looking for a quick Northern France golf break that feels a world away from a standard chain hotel, this place fits the bill. It works well for couples and small groups who like a bit of history with their golf, plus it's handy for getting in and out via Calais for a long weekend.

There's a health club on site with a fitness suite and sauna, which is ideal if you want to loosen up after 18 holes. Food is a big part of the appeal too. Boulogne is a serious seafood town and La Matelote is one of the standout restaurants locally, making it a great option if you want your evening to feel like part of the trip, not just an afterthought.

Who is this for? Golfers planning a short break in Northern France, couples after a romantic château base, and smaller groups who want character and good dining.

Who is it best for? Anyone who values atmosphere and authenticity, wants an easy run from Calais, and prefers a boutique château to a big resort.

Note: Weekend supplements apply, please ask for details when booking.

Accommodation at Najeti Hotel Clery

The château has 27 bedrooms, each keeping the original charm of the building while adding the practical bits you'd expect from quality accommodation. The feel is intimate rather than corporate, so it's a good match if you like smaller hotels where staff remember who you are.

Outside, the setting is the real win. With 12 acres around the property, you've got space to switch off between rounds and enjoy the countryside. The elevated position gives you those classic château views across the Boulogne landscape, especially at the start and end of the day.

For golfers, the on-site health club is a nice extra. The fitness suite is useful if you like a quick stretch session before heading out, and the sauna is perfect for recovery once you're back. It's not trying to be a massive spa resort, it's simply a solid facility that adds value to a golf weekend.

The château's history is part of the charm. General Berthier used this place as his base during the Napoleonic campaigns, and that 18th-century architecture is still intact throughout the building. You get the sense of staying somewhere with genuine heritage, without the stuffiness that sometimes comes with it.

On the food front, you're well placed for a proper meal in Boulogne. La Matelote is widely regarded as one of the town's top restaurants and is known for seafood done properly. If you plan to make dinner a highlight of the trip, it's worth booking ahead.

The location works brilliantly for UK golfers. You're close enough to Calais to make this an easy weekend break, yet far enough into the French countryside to feel like a proper getaway. The combination of period surroundings, modern facilities and quality dining makes it a smart base for anyone wanting a Northern France golf trip with a bit more character than the usual options.

A delightful hotel, we have stayed before but this was exceptional not least the food we enjoyed on all three nights. An idyllic hotel just across the Channel.
