Kingswood Golf & Country Club

Set in the heart of Surrey, Kingswood Golf and Country Club was designed in the 1920s by five-time Open champion James Braid. If you're a bit of a golf architecture geek (guilty), you'll spot plenty of Braid's influence straight away, with bunkering that asks questions from the tee and greens that make you earn your two-putts.

The par-72 parkland golf course measures just over 6,900 yards off the white tees, so it's no pushover, but it's not just about length. Mature, tree-lined fairways tighten the angles and the gentle movement in the greens puts a premium on placing your approach on the right tier. Miss the wrong side and you're looking at a tricky up-and-down rather than a straightforward two-putt.

It's also got genuine tournament credentials, having hosted British Senior Open Qualifying in 2011 and three Ladies European Opens. The layout rewards accuracy and course management over brute force, which is classic Braid. You'll need to plot your way round rather than just smashing driver at every opportunity, and that's exactly what makes it such a satisfying test.

If you're building a Surrey golf tour, you're well placed here. Walton Heath Golf Club and Effingham Golf Club are both within easy reach, so you can tick off a couple of top Surrey courses in one trip. Off the course, Reigate, Epsom and Sutton are all close by for a decent post-round dinner and a couple of pints.

Who is this for? Golfers after a proper Surrey parkland test with pedigree, plus the convenience of staying on-site.

Who is it best for? Groups who like plotting their way round rather than just smashing driver, and want an easy base for ticking off a couple of top Surrey courses in one trip.

Kingswood Golf & Country Club

Designed by 5-time Open Champion James Braid in 1928, this traditional parkland is one of the leading courses in Surrey. In 2007, the course underwent a re-design under the guidance of Howard Swan, recognised course architect for James Braid designed courses. These recent renovations have made Kingswood a 6,954 yard golf course which offers generous fairways, well positioned bunkers and smooth greens.

As the host venue of the 2014 Surrey Amateur Championship and Surrey Open, Kingswood is a course associated with championship golf. Off the white tees the par of 72 is matched by a standard scratch score of 74, ensuring anyone playing to their handicap has had their game tested. With just 2 par-4’s measuring under 400 yards, the course is one where strong driving and ball striking is key to scoring well while trying to avoid the numerous new bunkers which formed a major part of Swan’s redesign.

The course has four excellent par-3’s which vary from the shortest 7th hole with a yardage of around 120 yards to the testing 10th which can play 215 yards from the whites. The best chance of birdies come on the par-5’s with all 4 reachable in two big shots on fast running fairways. The course finishes strongly with the par-4 16th measuring 470 yards before ending with a dog-leg par-4 which finishes in front of a welcoming veranda offering views over the Chipstead Valley – a very enjoyable 19th hole experience.

Accommodation at Kingswood Golf & Country Club

The Lodge at Kingswood is a four-star equivalent boutique stay set in calm, green surroundings on the estate. There are 18 spacious rooms, so it feels intimate rather than like a big, busy resort, which is ideal if your group wants a quiet night before an early tee time.

Rooms are modern in style and thoughtfully kitted out with the essentials golfers actually use: Wi-Fi, Sky TV, a mini-bar, Nespresso machine, in-room safe and 24-hour service. A handful of rooms look out towards the par-4 18th and over Chipstead Valley, which is a lovely view to wake up to if you can time it right. The beds are comfortable and the setting is genuinely peaceful, so you're guaranteed a proper night's rest after a day on the course.

Logistically it's a very straightforward UK golf break. You're around 10 minutes from Junction 8 of the M25, and Epsom and Reigate are under 20 minutes away if you want to head out for extra dining options beyond the estate.

Back on site, the Clubhouse is exactly what you want after 18 holes: relaxed, welcoming and geared up for groups. The 19th Hole is the natural landing spot for a post-round drink, with views across the 18th green, and there's a solid selection of bar snacks and freshly prepared meals if you're keeping things simple. Whether you're grabbing a quick bite between rounds or settling in for a post-golf meal with your group, the Clubhouse provides a comfortable, sociable setting without any stuffiness.

If you'd like to wrap accommodation and golf into one neat package, you can include Kingswood on your next Surrey golf break and build in nearby courses for a multi-round tour.
