La Reserva Golf Club

Since opening in 2003, La Reserva Golf Club has earned its place among Andalucía's finest golf destinations, a parkland layout carved into the hillside of the prestigious Sotogrande estate with views that stretch across the Mediterranean and into the Andalusian hills.

Course design and challenge

American architect Cabell B. Robinson has done a cracking job of using the natural slopes. You'll find generous-looking fairways, but don't be fooled, the best angles into the greens matter. The putting surfaces are large and can be seriously undulating, so distance control is a big theme all day. Water hazards feature on a number of holes and they're not just for show, they ask you to pick your line and commit.

The layout sits 25 minutes from Gibraltar Airport and 90 minutes from Málaga, which makes it accessible whether you're flying into the Costa del Sol or coming across from the Rock.

What to expect on the day

There's enough room from the tee to enjoy yourself, but you'll score best if you plot your way around rather than simply trying to overpower it. Miss in the wrong spots and you'll be relying on a tidy short game, particularly where slopes and bunkering defend the greens. The elevation change adds another layer, you're reading breaks and judging carry all round, which keeps you thinking.

Conditioning is excellent throughout the season. The greens run true and quick, fairways are well presented, and the whole place has that polished, championship feel you'd expect from one of Spain's most exclusive golf estates.

The quality is often compared with neighbouring Valderrama, especially in terms of conditioning and the all-round test. If you're building a Southern Spain itinerary, it's a very easy yes.

Include La Reserva on your next Sotogrande golf break and we'll help line up tee times and the right base for your group.

Who is this for?

Golfers heading to Southern Spain who want a polished, modern championship round in Sotogrande, with straightforward airport access and plenty to do off the course.

Who is it best for?

Mid to low handicappers and golf societies who enjoy strategic design, top conditioning and scenery that feels properly special. Higher handicaps will still get plenty out of the day if they're comfortable with a proper test and don't mind working for their score.

La Reserva Golf Club

La Reserva was designed by the American, Cabell B. Robinson, who is responsible for a number of renowned projects along the Andalucian coast, including La Cala and Alcaidesa Links.

The course measures over 6,700 metres from the championship markers and is a severe test of golf, but like most good modern resort courses, the wide variety of tees ensures that golfers of every calibre are suitably accommodated for.

La Reserva is characterised by its generous fairways and its massive, undulating greens, which are protected by vast swathes of stunning white sand. With stunning views of the mountains and the amazing Mediterranean coastline, it is no surprise that La Reserva is held in such high regard.

La Reserva is ranked as one of the best courses in Spain
