Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort

Perched on the cliffs above Bulgaria's eastern coastline, Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort looks straight out over the Black Sea. If you like your golf with a bit of theatre, this is the sort of place where you'll spend as much time taking photos as you will reading putts.

It sits on the same stretch of coast as the world-famous Thracian Cliffs, and between them they've helped put Bulgaria firmly on the European golf map. The Ian Woosnam-designed course is part of the European Tour Properties network and it hosted the European Tour Senior Classic in 2018, which tells you plenty about the standard of the venue and the facilities.

From a practical point of view, it's an easy one to sell to a UK group. Varna International Airport is under an hour away, Balchik is close by for a change of scene and the resort is set up for golfers, not just sunseekers. You've got a five-star hotel on site, dining options, a clubhouse you'll actually want to spend time in and two outdoor swimming pools for the non-golf hours.

In short, Lighthouse is ideal if you want guaranteed resort comfort, strong value for money and a course with real coastal character, without committing to long-haul travel or Algarve-level pricing. If you're putting together a Bulgaria golf holiday, Lighthouse pairs brilliantly with Thracian Cliffs for a proper coastal double.

Who is this for?

Golfers, couples or groups after a five-star clifftop break with sea views, warm-weather golf and easy access from the UK.

Who is it best for?

Small groups and couples who want quality golf and resort comfort with proper coastal scenery without the price tag of Portugal or Spain.

Lighthouse Golf Course

The lush, parkland-style course by Ian Woosnam at Lighthouse Resort makes the most of its position on the dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking the Black Sea. The panoramas here are truly distracting but that's one thing you can't afford to indulge yourself in too much if you want to carve out a decent score on this striking course.

Woosnam laid out this course as all resort layouts should be, with golfers of many different abilities in mind. There are multiple teeing areas on every hole and the design is challenging enough to entertain but never punitive in the way some egotistical designers like to make their signature courses.

At  6,720-yards and with a par of 71, the Lighthouse course blends challenge and playability to perfection, especially considering the fickle nature of the breeze off the Black Sea. The greens are superb; large, undulating but always true. Perhaps most surprising of all is the mature feel to the whole site. It was completed in late 2008 but you'd never guess with its strands of mature trees and the high quality of the fairways and greens.

Lighthouse is ranked as one of the best courses in Bulgaria

Accommodation at Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort

The five-star hotel at Lighthouse has 184 rooms and suites, so it works nicely for couples, fourballs and bigger groups who want to stay under one roof. Rooms are modern and built for easy holiday living, with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, cable channels and high-speed internet. If you're staying a little longer, or you just want more breathing room, the suites are the obvious upgrade.

Everything is geared towards golfers. You're only a short walk from the clubhouse, so there's no faff with shuttles or taxis before your tee time. The clubhouse itself is the hub, with a well-stocked pro shop, professional tuition and the sort of bar that becomes the natural meeting point once everyone's off the course. There's also a restaurant serving international favourites, which is ideal when you've got mixed tastes in the group.

When you're not playing, you've got proper resort facilities to lean on. Two outdoor swimming pools are perfect between rounds, and the spa is a welcome add-on if you're walking 18 in the coastal breeze. If you fancy breaking up the golf, there's tennis on site, plus fishing and boat trips nearby. Paragliding is also available for anyone who likes their adrenaline with their after-golf beer.

The resort sits in the Cape Kaliakra region, a stretch of coastline blessed with a Mediterranean-like climate and a growing reputation as one of Europe's best-value golf destinations. You're near the village of Balchik, 30 miles north of Varna, which gives you a proper seafront town for evenings out without feeling like you're stuck in a resort bubble.

Rooms are designed with holidaymakers in mind rather than just golfers passing through. The suites offer more space and upgraded amenities, ideal for couples or anyone planning a longer stay. Dining options include the clubhouse restaurant, which covers everything from hearty breakfasts to post-round dinners, and the hotel bar, which is a natural gathering point in the evenings.

Varna Airport is serviced by direct daily flights from London Gatwick and Luton, plus charter flights from Manchester, making Lighthouse one of the more accessible five-star golf resorts in Eastern Europe. If you want an easy, all-in-one base for a Bulgaria golf break, Lighthouse ticks the boxes: five-star comfort, good communal spaces and everything close enough that you can focus on golf rather than logistics.

Rooms were great for seasoned, older travellers who don't want to share. We ate twice in the evening and the buffet dinner was reasonable value. The breakfast was very comprehensive for both cooked and uncooked eaters. The reception and concierge staff were very helpful. Overall good.

The room was excellent, food was average for all inclusive but excellent in a la carte restaurant if you pay full price (our meal cost 85 euros). Minimal outdoor facilities except for the pool and nearbye Balchik town untidy! Spirits were only local and branded drinks expensive. Nowhere near as good a value as Belek hotels. We would not visit again. No black tea (English)available only scented/flower tea flavours.
