Manor of Groves Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Set in the rolling Hertfordshire countryside and within easy driving distance of London, Manor of Groves Hotel, Golf & Country Club is a handy option when you want a quick golf fix without the faff of long travel. The parkland course is laid out as two contrasting loops of nine, so you get a nice change of feel as you turn for home, especially if you're playing 27 or 36 across a weekend.

The hotel mixes classic country-house character with modern comfort. The original wing has the period touches, plus a handful of four-poster suites if you're making a bit of an occasion of it. The newer wing brings extra space and contemporary bedrooms, all linked together by a bright glass atrium that doubles as the social hub.

Off the course, the on-site health club gives the trip a proper "golf and unwind" angle. You have a 20-metre pool, thermal facilities and a sizeable gym, plus Thalgo treatments if you want to loosen up after your round. Add a relaxed brasserie and bar on-site and you have everything in one place for a straightforward, sociable golf break.

Manor of Groves Golf Club

In recent years there has been continuous and dedicated investment to improve the standard of the course and its condition, adding to the already impressive golf experience. It is fair to view the course in two distinct halves, as the front nine weaves its way around the old manor gardens, while the closing stretch is more open and undulating.

The stunning Hertfordshire countryside is the perfect backdrop for a beautiful course, where the awkward positioning of many raised greens makes choosing the right club tricky at the best of times.

The pleasantly demanding course is a highlight of this excellent resort, where a golf break will certainly be memorable. The newly established viewing gallery gives visitors the chance to watch their fellow golfers tackle the testing closing hole.

If you need to arrange a corporate or society event, the Manor of Groves has conference and banqueting facilities to cater for up to 500 delegates.

Accommodation at Manor of Groves Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Manor of Groves combines an original country-house wing with a newer hotel extension, joined by a striking glass atrium. The newer rooms add extra space and a more contemporary feel, while the older wing keeps the period character, including several four-poster suites that are ideal for birthdays, anniversaries or a treat-yourself weekend.

Guest rooms are designed for an easy golf stay, with flat-screen TVs with Freeview, broadband internet access, hairdryers and marble bathrooms. If you're travelling as a group, the mix of room styles makes it straightforward to balance comfort with budget, especially for short breaks.

The atrium is the natural meet-up spot after golf. It's where you'll find the brasserie and bar, serving international dishes and a well-stocked drinks selection, so you can keep the evening simple without heading out. The setting is relaxed and contemporary, with plenty of space to spread out if you're in a larger group or settling in for a post-round debrief.

For downtime, the on-site health club is a big plus. Facilities include a 20-metre swimming pool, steam room, spa, sauna, solarium, aerobics studio and a three-tiered gym equipped with Technogym's key system. Thalgo health and beauty treatments are also available if your idea of recovery is a massage rather than a stretching session.

The health club is particularly useful if you're travelling with non-golfers or if you want to build in a proper rest day between rounds. The pool and thermal facilities are well maintained, and the gym is spacious enough that it doesn't feel cramped even when the hotel is busy.

If you're staying in one of the four-poster suites in the original wing, you get a bit more space and a touch of old-fashioned elegance. These rooms are tucked away in the quieter part of the hotel, so they're a good shout if you're after a more peaceful stay or marking a special occasion. The suites still come with all the modern conveniences, so you're not sacrificing comfort for character.

With everything from golf and dining to fitness and spa under one roof, Manor of Groves makes it easy to tailor your stay to suit your group, whether you're a serious golfer looking to squeeze in 36 holes, a couple combining golf with relaxation, or a society after a straightforward, all-in-one package.

I've been on many golf breaks in the UK, where we have been looking for a low cost weekend away. Most weekends have been compromised in some way, either food not great, rooms a bit rough, but we know it's a case of 'you get what you pay for' so happy to go with the flow. The Manor of Groves weekend was above expectation. The rooms were lovely, the service was excellent and we had full choice on the dinner menu (a lot of breaks give you a set menu). In addition we had use of the spa facilities (sauna, steam room etc...). Unfortunately I was unaware so took no swim shorts, but know for next time. A short cab ride into Sawbridgeworth in the evening for some nice pubs if you want to take yourself away from the hotel bar. Cab fare was £6. Golf course was fine, not the greatest to be honest, but our crowd were all mid handicappers so happy with it. Just glad for a golf weekend away in a nice hotel. Golf club bar was fine, sky sports on TV and relaxing place for a couple of post-round beers. All in all a great venue for a low cost weekend with friends, hitting some balls and a staying in a lovely hotel
