Marco Simone Golf and Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club sits just 30 minutes north-east of Rome and delivers a championship-standard layout that made history in 2023 when it became only the third course on continental Europe to host arguably golf's biggest tournament; the Ryder Cup. If you like ticking off big-name venues, this one's an easy win without having to disappear to the other side of Italy.

Ryder Cup hosting rights are hard earned and you'll see why from the first tee. It's designed to punish the loose one and reward a proper game plan. The course is a proper test from the back tees, but it's not just about brute strength, it rewards sensible decisions, accurate driving and approaches that find the right section of the green. Lakes come into play on several holes and the bunkering is positioned to catch a lazy swing, especially if you try to bite off too much.

It's also a very good-looking round. The routing makes the most of the rolling ground and you'll get constant views across the countryside, with the Marco Simone Castle popping up in the background to remind you you're definitely not in Surrey. The closing holes feel built for match play and big moments, which makes sense when you think about what they were designed to host.

The practice facilities are solid, with a decent range and short-game area to loosen up before you head out. Worth using if you've driven straight from the airport.

After golf, the clubhouse terrace is the place to be. The 19th hole serves up panoramic views across the property and it's ideal for a couple of post-round beers while you debrief, compare scorecards and decide which hole you're having a rematch with tomorrow.

Ryder Cup Course

Course designer Jim Fazio has been responsible for the creation of some of the best courses in the world having masterminded courses like Trump National in New York and Lost Lakes Golf Club, Florida both of which are widely revered as 2 of the most beautiful courses in America.

The Championship Course at Marcio Simone Golf Club is the headline course and boasts 18 fantastically designed holes that weave through the stunning natural landscape. The course features undulating fairways, small greens that are often well protected and some of the best tee shots in the country.

Signature hole: 2nd hole, par 3

The signature hole is considered to bet the par 3, 2nd hole which measures in 185 yards and is arguably the most picturesque on the course. The small green is a feature of the course and is guarded by a lake at the front which awaits any errant tee shots. The 2nd provides the best views of the Marco Simone Castle as this lies behind the golf club. Another of the stand out holes on the course is the 546 yard, par 5 1st hole which plays downhill with a slight dog left to the right. For the longer hitters the green is reachable in 2 but there is plenty of risk and reward associated in doing so as the green is heavily guarded by bunkers and a lake meaning laying up is the best option.
