Moortown Golf Club

Located just north of central Leeds, Moortown Golf Club is one of Yorkshire's standout venues and a genuine piece of British golf history. It's a classic lowland heathland test routed through mature woodland and open moorland, with plenty of strategic questions from the tee.

The course was designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie, best known for Augusta National, and you can feel his influence in the shaping and shot values. Think bold bunkering, clever angles into greens and putting surfaces where a good approach really matters. Stray out of position and you'll quickly find yourself playing recovery golf.

Moortown's reputation was cemented in 1929 when it hosted the inaugural Ryder Cup match on British soil. It has continued to welcome top-class events ever since, including the 2009 Brabazon Trophy, proof that Mackenzie's design still stands up as a proper test of golf.

The layout stretches across 175 acres of heathland, where mature trees frame sightlines and the terrain rolls naturally with the landscape. Expect classic heathland turf, native rough that punishes wayward shots and greens with subtle breaks that reward local knowledge. The bunkering is properly placed, as much about position as punishment, and the course asks you to think your way around rather than simply overpower it.

If you're building a short break in West Yorkshire, Moortown is a cracking addition to a Leeds itinerary.

Moortown Golf Club

The doctor’s influence is plainly evident; his most notable recommendations saw the bunkering deepened and made more severe, and the greens enlarged, with the slopes and contours that are reminiscent of a seaside course.

The designer was so dearly loved that the members elected him vice-president and subsequently captain, and he left a lasting legacy on Moortown. The traditional course demands great creativity, and is a true joy to play during a golf tour of York.

Moortown Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in Yorkshire
