Palmares Beach House

If you like your Algarve golf with a bit of peace and quiet, Palmares Beach House Hotel is a cracking shout. It's a genuinely boutique setup, just 20 rooms, sitting above Palmares where the fairways run through dunes towards the Atlantic. And yes, the views are the headline. From the rooms and terraces you're looking across the course first, then out to Lagos Bay, Meia Praia and the Ria de Alvor with Lagos in the distance.

The West Algarve here is quieter than the central strip, less developed and more authentic. You're close enough to the action but far enough removed to feel like you've discovered something the package crowds haven't. The hotel sits between the practice ground and the 27th hole, which sounds intrusive but in reality offers the kind of access serious golfers appreciate without any of the noise. The design is clever, low-impact architecture that blends into the dunes rather than dominating them.

This isn't a resort in the traditional sense. There's no sprawling complex, no kids' club, no all-inclusive buffet. What you get instead is intimacy, space to breathe and a level of service that comes from having fewer guests to look after. If you want to watch the sun drop into the Atlantic from your private balcony with a cold beer and no interruptions, this is exactly where you should be.

Who is this for? Golfers seeking a quiet, design-led base in the West Algarve with direct access to one of Portugal's most underrated courses. Ideal for 3 to 5 night breaks where you want to play Palmares more than once without the commute.

Who is it best for? Couples or small groups who value quality over quantity, prefer boutique charm to resort scale and want to play Palmares without the hassle of transfers or early morning drives.

The Birdies: Panoramic sea views from every room, on-course location with practice ground access, intimate boutique feel, excellent seafood restaurant, ideal for couples and small groups.

The Bogies: Not a full resort, limited facilities for families, quieter location if you're after nightlife, small hotel so book early in peak season.

Palmares Golf Course

With views over the Lagos Bay and towards the distant Monchique Hills, Palmares has a stunning setting, and has an equally impressive course. Five of the holes border the sand dunes near the coastline, and have a distinct links feel, while the remainder winds through the lovely tree-lined undulations of the estate's higher ground.

Designed by Trent Jones Jr, the 6,905 yard layout is an Algarve favourite, and has a nerve-jangling opening tee shot, where golfers must stand atop the elevated tee and find the fairway of the demanding dog-leg par-4. Palmares, featuring 27 holes where all 3 loops of 9 return to the clubhouse, has spent 3 consecutive years as Best Golf Course in Portugal.

With the delights of Lagos nearby, it is no surprise that Palmares is such a favourite with regular golf holiday visitors to the popular Portuguese coastline.

Signature Hole: Hole 19, Par 4, 401 yards, SI 6

Featuring on “Golf Worlds” 100 classic golf holes, this hole is simply a masterpiece. The spectacular view from the tee overlooks the entire Southern Coast of Palmares and will almost certainly provide a sense of awe to all golfers. From the tee, a conservative approach uses the downhill slope playing straight. Shots played to the right of the fairway will make for a shortened 2nd shot, due to the nature of the contours. However, what makes this hole particularly dramatic is the possibility of a ‘risk-reward’, gained when cutting the corner of the dogleg and heading directly to the green. Although, golfers should be aware of unseen bunkers and rough surrounding the landing area between these two options. The 19th is certainly one the aggressive player will want to have a go at.

Accommodation at Palmares Beach House

The 20 rooms split into 18 standard doubles and two suites, all of which share the same panoramic sea view over Lagos Bay. Light floods in through large windows and the interiors lean minimal without feeling cold, soft linens, natural wood and a muted palette that lets the view do the talking. Every room opens onto a private balcony, which becomes the de facto 19th hole once you've showered off the day's golf. If you're the type who judges a hotel by its view from the balcony, you'll be very happy here.

The suites offer more space and a separate seating area, ideal if you're staying longer or prefer room to spread out. Standard rooms are perfectly adequate for a golf break, comfortable beds, good showers and enough storage for clubs and kit. Tea and coffee facilities are provided, though most guests gravitate to the communal spaces rather than holing up in their rooms.

Practical bits golfers care about: there's easy access to the practice area and first-tee logistics are simple because you're already on site. If you're heading out early, ask about breakfast timings and whether they can sort something light before a morning tee time. Storage is sensible for a short golf break, but if you're travelling with a full travel cover it's worth confirming where bags can be kept. This is a 'less is more' hotel. Don't come expecting a big resort set-up with pools, entertainment and crowds. Do come expecting calm communal spaces, a private feel and staff who can point you towards the best beaches around Lagos and Alvor when you fancy a day off.

The Bar Lounge and Restaurant anchor the ground floor and this is where the hotel's intimate scale pays dividends. The kitchen works directly with local fishermen, so the seafood is as fresh as it gets. Menus change based on the day's catch and the cooking is confident, simple preparations that let quality ingredients speak for themselves. Grilled sea bass, octopus salad, clams in garlic and white wine, this is coastal Portuguese food done properly. The wine list leans local, with a strong showing from the Alentejo and Douro regions.

The bar stays open late enough for a nightcap but doesn't try to be a party venue. It's the kind of place where you linger over a digestif, swap stories about the round and plan tomorrow's tee time. Service is attentive without being intrusive, staff know the course, the local area and where to send you if you want to explore beyond the hotel.

For those who do venture out, Alvor and Lagos are both within easy reach. Alvor is the quieter of the two, a traditional fishing village with a long sandy beach and a handful of excellent seafood restaurants. Lagos has more energy, a historic old town, lively marina and a string of dramatic cliff-backed beaches including Ponta da Piedade. The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, the region's FIA Grade 1 circuit that hosts top-level racing, is a short drive inland if you fancy swapping birdies for brake zones.
