Pestana Carvoeiro Resort

Just 45 minutes from Faro, Pestana Carvoeiro makes it easy to land, transfer and get straight into holiday mode. The headline is golf: five championship courses in the wider Pestana portfolio with unlimited golf included, plus two on-site layouts with genuine pedigree, having hosted elite ladies' and senior events.

The resort sits under the Monchique Mountains and works brilliantly as a relaxed Algarve base, especially if you want space and flexibility. Alongside the golf you've got outdoor pools, tennis and quick access to some of the region's best beaches, which makes it a smart pick for mixed groups and families as well as societies chasing plenty of rounds. You'll stay in spacious, self-catered accommodation with the freedom to eat in or head out.

You're also close to the towns of Lagoa and Carvoeiro, so it's easy to swap the clubhouse for a proper Portuguese meal, a few bars around the old square and a stroll by the sea. If you want a livelier night, Albufeira is within easy reach by taxi. It's a great resort choice for families or large golf groups who want flexibility and variety.

Golf Courses at Pestana Carvoeiro Resort

For golfers, there is a choice of two courses on the property and another three great courses just 15-minutes away by car. The clubhouses at the two on-site courses have everything you need from buggy hire, merchandise, club hire, snacks and a putting green for final preparation before you head out to play. Once you’ve finished up, you should stay for a while and grab some food and drink in the clubhouse to pour over the round you have just completed.

Gramacho Course

Nick Price, former world number one, worked with Ronald Fream to build this 18-hole course with 27 greens. This may sound strange but it means that this course is very versatile and can be set-up in multiple different ways. This course has played host to the Portuguese Ladies Open many times, which gives an example of the championship pedigree of the course.

One of the highlights of this course is the incredible use of the natural terrain that was on offer during the building of the course. Exposed natural stone, large trees, lakes and historic walls all add to the unique character of the round.

Signature Hole: Hole 5, Par 4, 400 yards, SI 2

The 5th hole at Pestana Gramacho in the Western Algarve is considered by many to be a hidden gem, and is the perfect showcase for Pestana’s undulating fairways and slick greens. A dramatic driving hole, featuring an uphill fairway and a significant dogleg to the right.

Vale da Pinta

This course hosted European Seniors Tour Qualifying eight times and is a great golfing challenge for players of all levels. The course is highly playable and intelligent design by Ronald Fream has resulted in a superb experience. Strategic bunkering has been deployed perfectly to protect the course and water hazards add another element of danger for your scorecard. The terrain is an absolute joy on the eye and includes some wonderful trees, including an olive tree that is over 1200 years old!

The 13th hole is a real stand-out and a potential card-wrecker. A tight tee-shot requiring the avoidance of a large water hazard and many bunkers leaves a short approach to a very well-protected green. Greenside bunkers await errant wedges.

Signature hole: Hole 4, Par 5, 560 yards (Black Tees), SI 6

The course places great importance on accurate shot making- tight fairways, doglegs, and many well-placed hazards leave little margin for error. Perhaps the finest example of this can be found on the par 5 4th hole, measuring at 560 yards. The hole certainly provides a stern test of the driver, with a long and accurate drive towards a marker post, made tougher by the out of bounds on the left, and rough on the right. Further caution is required on the approach, with an ever-narrowing fairway and a well-protected, undulating green making for a tough par.

Pestana Golf Academy and Driving Range

As you would expect from a championship venue, the practice facilities are truly world-class. If you would like to get some tuition in whilst you are on holiday, the PGA professionals at the resort are here for you. Group clinics are also available for those who just want a quick tweak rather than a full analysis of their swing.

The driving range is equipped with a shelter to shade you from the sun and cool you down as you hit balls in the sun. You can loosen off with a bucket of balls before making your way to the first tee or you can spend a few hours working on your swing. There are also great facilities for you to work on your short game, putting and bunker skills.

Off-site Courses

Wait, there’s more! If you upgrade to the ‘Unlimited Golf’ package then there are another three courses around a 15-minute drive from the resort. Two incredible parkland experiences await you at Silves, Alto and Vila Sol. Each of these courses is of championship quality in its own right and they all have a unique character.

Together, at Pestana Carvoeiro, you have five wonderful courses to enjoy. It seems only right to play all of them then try your favourites again. Maybe this is one of the reasons why so many people return to this resort so frequently.

Accommodation at Pestana Carvoeiro Resort

Pestana Carvoeiro offers 155 apartments sleeping two to eight people and 144 villas in the same size range, so whether you're travelling as a four-ball or a larger society group, there's space to spread out. Every apartment and villa comes with a fully equipped kitchen and a private patio, perfect for cooking your own meals and enjoying them outside with a drink and some post-round chat. The villas add a private pool to the mix, giving you your own space to cool off between rounds.

The well-equipped kitchens suit anyone who likes to cook, and if you're staying for a few days it's easy to stock up from local supermarkets in Carvoeiro or Lagoa. If cooking isn't your thing, the town of Carvoeiro is a short drive and packed with restaurants, many clustered around the old square where you can find everything from traditional Portuguese fare to international options.

You won't go hungry on site either, with both clubhouses serving reliable favourites and local dishes from breakfast through to post-round drinks. On warm evenings you can head for the al fresco barbecue, or if you're marking a special occasion, the resort offers fine dining options. Extra care has been taken to provide great dining options for guests with special dietary requirements too, so there's something for everyone.

Off the property, if you want something livelier, Albufeira is 30 minutes by taxi, or closer to home there's Praia da Rocha beach, where a strip of bars and late-night spots runs along one street, usually good value and ideal for forgetting that three-putt on 18.

Away from golf, the resort has an outdoor pool and tennis courts, and the staff can arrange off-site excursions to nature reserves, historic sites and cultural landmarks, a good way to see more of Portugal if you fancy a day off the course. The beaches nearby are among the best in the Algarve, so if you're travelling with family or non-golfers, there's plenty to keep everyone happy.

Brilliant resort although we were quite a way from the clubhouse but the taxi shuttles were good and always on time. We had a problem with one of our 2 bed apartments but it was sorted out efficiently and to our entire satisfaction between the resort & YGT. The town of Carvoeiro is very beautiful and only €12 in a taxi (8 people).

Very bad customer service. Not accomodating at all. We arrived slightly earlier than scheduled but the resort had no safe place to store our luggage. Were told to leave it in changing room which had no lockers. Two villas were 30mins walk apart. Came as a group but spent most of the time in two groups, what a waste. Villa 181 had issues with water everyday and ants on last two days. Rang maintenance, main reception and tried to get hold of manager, all were useless.

The apartments we stayed in were not elaborate but were very comfortable. They were equipped with everything you need for self catering not that we made use of this as were dined out every day. The breakfasts were good and plentiful and we ate evening meals in the clubhouse on 2 occasions with both of them being very good on not overly expensive.

First visit in the New Year of 2013 was supposed to be a hotel B&B week but hotel was closed. We ended up with a one bedroom apartment overlooking the 18th at Gramacho with breakfast at the club included & self catering for the rest of the food. The apartment was well appointed & the local off course supermarket very reasonable. All the Pestana courses were in good condition. We booked again in the New Year of 2015 because we enjoyed 2013. There was a bit of a hassle to get a suitable apartment but the resort staff fixed the problem within a couple of days and we had another good week with excellent weather. Silves had matured and has some spectacular elevated tees.

Accommodation was first class, a 3 bed villa between the three of us overlooking Vale de Pinta. The courses were spectacular, we played Gramacho twice, Vale de Pinta once, Silves Twice and Vila Sol on our last day. Gramacho for me was a cut above the others, in fantastic condition, and a challenging course, with the par 3 10th possibly the nicest par three I have ever played. Vale de Pinta is much more elevated, and although I wouldn't recommend walking this course, it was a fantastic layout with some really memorable holes. Silves was the favourite of our other group members, it was in outstanding condition, the par 5 13th dogleg over water is without a doubt the nicest hole I have ever played. It was an easier test of golf compared to Gramacho and Vale de Pinta. As we had an evening flight we played Vila Sol on the way to the airport. the course was a little dry and much busier than the others, probably due to it being in Vilamoura. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anybody, I have been to a few resorts in Spain such as La Cala and this place is a different class. I would recommend a car to get about though.

My Caddy Tip - Use an iron off the first on Gramacho, the ditch at the end of the fairway is deceptivley closer than it looks! Also drive the 17th green if you have the distance, laying up before the water is difficult as everything slopes towards the water.
