Quinta do Lago South Course

The Quinta do Lago South Course sits in Portugal's Algarve and is widely seen as the resort's headline act. It has hosted the European Tour eight times, so you can expect a proper championship feel from the first tee.

Connected to the Quinta do Lago Resort and just 20 minutes from Faro Airport, it also comes with serious pedigree off the course. The resort was named 'Europe's Best Golf Destination' at the World Golf Awards in 2015 and 2016, plus Golf Digest's 'Best International Resort' in 2016 and 2017.

In playing terms, the South Course is slightly longer than the North and it asks a clear question all day: can you keep it straight and control your distances? Strong tee shots set up your scoring chances, but loose swings are quickly punished. The greens have more movement than they first appear, so good pace control and a confident read are worth a few shots over 18 holes.

If you enjoy plotting your way round rather than simply opening the shoulders, you'll feel right at home here. It's a great pick for golfers building an Algarve trip around recognisable names and tour-history courses, with the bonus of resort convenience for groups and couples.

Who is this for? Mid-to-low handicappers who want a championship-standard round in the Algarve, groups looking to combine quality golf with resort convenience and anyone chasing European Tour heritage in a warm-weather destination.

Who is it best for? Golfers who value accuracy over distance, enjoy strategic course management and want to play a layout with genuine tour pedigree close to Faro.

South Course

This is the one that golfers want to play most largely in part to the course hosting the European Tour on eight occasions. The South Course is nestled perfectly in the Ria Formosa nature reserve, providing golfers with a great golfing experience, with beautiful views and picturesque settings.

A number of holes will test you on this course, with the 8th, 10th and 18th holes certainly deserving of a mention, proving themselves as challenging par 4 holes for even the lowest handicapped players. But the two holes that prove most testing are the 15th and 17th. The 15th is a 218 yard par 3 that requires a lengthy tee shot to carry over a lake onto a well guarded green surrounded by pine trees.

The 17th hole is a par 5 that proves to be worth the wait, as a spectacular view with numerous pine trees lining the hole, ensures a fine finish. An accurate tee shot is vital around the dogleg to avoid the rough, possibly setting up an approach shot to the green. There is no room for error on this hole as anything left or right will most definitely leave you in some trouble. It is not surprising that the South course at Quinta do Lago is ranked as one of the best courses in Portugal.

Facilities

Before teeing off, it is definitely worth visiting the Pro Shop in the North/South Clubhouse, where a variety of golf equipment and merchandise is on offer.

The practice facilities at Quinta Do Lago are phenomenal. The Quinta Do Lago Academy, which is in partnership with Paul McGinley, is available to golfers where they are assisted in improving their technique and strategy. Technology such as video analysis and flight scope are used effectively to analyse the individual’s strengths and weaknesses, in order to improve and take your game to the next level.

Quinta Do Lago also has a state-of-the-art TaylorMade performance centre, which is designed to give golfers the opportunity and access to try out the latest TaylorMade technology and equipment. The TaylorMade Select Fit System is also used to match the golfer’s swing with the ideal club. The performance centre is a very interesting way to understand your game in a more in-depth, entertaining way.
