Ratho Park Golf Club

Ratho Park Golf Club sits around nine miles west of Edinburgh city centre, tucked into countryside near Dalmahoy, and it's one of those courses that can fly under the radar. Which is exactly why it makes such a good addition to a golf break. You get a well-kept parkland test, a peaceful setting and a clubhouse with real character, set in a listed mansion house that feels a world away from the ring road.

On the course, it's classic Scottish parkland golf, straightforward to navigate and friendly to mixed abilities. You can step up and have a proper hit from the tee, there are a couple of moments where water asks a question and there's a driveable par 4 that will have plenty of groups debating risk versus reward. It's the sort of place where mid and higher handicappers can enjoy the round, while better players still need to plot their way around to score.

The big win is convenience. If you're flying in, Ratho is close enough to Edinburgh Airport to fit into an arrival or departure day without a long transfer. It also pairs neatly with nearby options, so it works brilliantly as a warm-up round, a final-day game before heading home or a change of pace alongside bigger-name venues. You're minutes from Dalmahoy's two courses, a short drive from the city's other parkland and links options and perfectly placed for a night out in the capital after your round.

Include Ratho Park Golf Club on your next Edinburgh Golf Break and you'll get quality parkland golf, lovely scenery and easy day's logistics.

Ratho Park Golf Club

The golf course at Ratho Park was originally laid out over the hilly parcel of land that is now home to Edinburgh Zoo. in fact it was in 1928 that the club relocated to the current site some 10 miles to the west. It was officially opened in 1929 and this was marked in a match between James Braid and Harry Vardon who were both in East Lothian for the Open which was taking place at the nearby Muirfield.

Thankfully the new course is considerably flatter, and although relatively short it provides a terrific golfing experience. Golfers can opt to try to drive the par 4 3rd as well as taking on the Par 3 15th hole, with water lurking, challenges lie unexpectedly around Ratho, but one you must take heed and enjoy. The course now measures just over 6,000 yards and is renowned for consistently having some of the best greens in the area.

In the shadow of the magnificent country house, Ratho Park's James Braid designed golf course is a gem and one that comes highly recommended for Edinburgh golf tour visitors.
