Retamares Golf

Retamares Golf is just 20 minutes outside Madrid, which makes it a very easy win if you're building a city break around a proper round of championship golf. Opened in 1993, the course has matured nicely and it now feels like a serious test rather than a "new" track.

It's the sort of layout that rewards accuracy and a bit of thinking. Miss the wrong side and you'll be scrambling, with well-placed hazards, plenty of movement on the greens and enough variety to keep things interesting across 18 holes. When it's playing firm it can feel particularly demanding, so don't expect to get away with simply hitting driver everywhere.

Retamares also has some proper pedigree. It has hosted three editions of the Madrid Ladies Masters (2007-2009) and has welcomed Challenge Tour events including the Mahou Open and the Spanish Royal Challenge, so you're walking the same fairways the pros have had to negotiate.

After your round, the clubhouse is a comfortable spot to refuel and replay the shots you'd like back, with good food and drink on hand. Better still, you're close enough to head straight into Madrid for restaurants, nightlife and a bit of culture if your group wants more than just golf.

Club de Golf Retamares

The stunning golf course at Retamares is one of the most famous in all Spain and was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal. The course combines both the natural landscape and creative design in order to produce a challenge for golfers all abilities.

The perfectly manicured fairways are lined with over 1,200 trees which adds character and difficulty to the course. There is a total of 8 water hazards which adds to the already incredible aesthetics of the course. The 6th is arguably the course’s signature hole, with players required to hit over a creek of water with their approach shot. The 2 tiered green is punishing if players are not accurate as ending up on the wrong tie could lead to a potential 3 put. The green is also well guarded by bunkers and depending on the pin position players could be left with the daunting task of hitting back towards the water.

Off the course there is a state of the art driving range which guests are invited to use at their leisure both before and after their round. The 30 covered bays are the ideal spot to warm up and hone in your skills before heading on the gorgeous Jose Maria Olazabal golf course.

Visitors can also sharpen up their short game skills as the club also has a great approach shot area, practice bunkers and putting green.
