Sandford Springs Golf Club

Set in the North Wessex Downs, Sandford Springs Hotel & Golf Club is a cracking option if you want a proper golf escape in the South of England, without a long trek. You're roughly an hour from London but it feels a world away once you're out on the property.

It's a neat set-up for groups and weekenders, pairing 4-star accommodation with 27 holes on site, plus the sort of facilities that make the trip easy from the moment you arrive. The clubhouse looks out across the course, there's a driving range for loosening up and the restaurant and bar are ideal for the post-round recap.

Location-wise, you're right on the edge of Berkshire and Hampshire, so it works well for mixed groups coming from different directions. If you like variety across a couple of rounds, the three loops of nine mean you can mix and match without feeling like you're just repeating the same day twice.

The hotel picked up TripAdvisor's 2020 Travellers' Choice award thanks to a genuinely peaceful atmosphere and staff who know how to look after golfers. With 40 en-suite rooms presented to 4-star standard, the property combines quality accommodation with direct access to the golf, making it ideal for weekend breaks, society trips or longer stays exploring the best of southern England golf.

Who is this for?
Golfers or golf groups seeking a convenient, high-quality golf break within easy reach of London, combining championship-standard golf with comfortable resort accommodation and excellent facilities.

Who is it best for?
Societies and groups wanting variety in their golf, couples looking for a relaxed weekend break with quality dining and peaceful surroundings, and golfers who appreciate the flexibility of three distinct nine-hole loops that can be mixed and matched across multiple rounds.

Golf Courses at Sandford Springs Golf Club

Sandford Springs Golf Club

Sandford Springs Golf Club makes great use of its enviable location to offer a trio of superb 9-hole courses – The Park, The Wood and The Lakes – all are distinctly different and provide great enjoyment.

Located between Basingstoke and Newbury, the course was laid out by Hawtree & Son (founder members of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects). The original 18-hole were officially opened by Sir Nick Faldo and Bernard Gallagher OBE in 1989, the final 9-holes were finished in the summer of 1991.

The signature hole is the 9th hole on The Park Course – a short downhill par-4 which requires an accurate long iron from the tee followed by a good approach to a putting surface which is guarded by two lakes. However it is possible for the long hitters to carry the 270 yards over water!

The Woods Course

With its mature trees creating a naturally scuplted challenge, accuracy is required to negotiate the avenues of The Woods, arguably the most difficult of Sandford Springs' three nines.

The Park Course

Strategy, placement and ball-striking are all examined fully on the Park, which, upon climbing to its highest levels, is commonly buffeted by strong prevailing winds that help make it more of a links test.

The Lakes Course

The water is everywhere at The Lakes! The opening four holes provide a tough start to any round - be it your initial induction or when commencing the back nine.

Accommodation at Sandford Springs Golf Club

The accommodation at Sandford Springs Hotel delivers exactly what golfers need after a day on the course: spacious, well-appointed rooms with views over the fairways, modern amenities and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. All 40 rooms are en suite and presented to 4-star standard, with a mix of twin and double configurations to suit different group makeups. For larger parties or families, interconnecting rooms are available, and there's a suite for those wanting a bit more space.

Every room comes with the modern essentials you'd expect, including TV, WiFi and aircon. The staff consistently earn praise for being helpful with the little things that make group trips run smoothly, whether that's arranging tee times, accommodating dietary requirements or just making sure everything's sorted so you can focus on your golf.

The hotel's position on the estate means you're never far from the action. Step out of your room and you're looking straight onto the golf course, with the clubhouse, driving range and first tees all within easy walking distance. It's this convenience that makes Sandford Springs particularly popular with societies and groups who want to maximise their time on the course without the hassle of transfers or lengthy walks between accommodation and golf.

Off the course, the hotel's restaurant and bar provide the same panoramic views across the fairways, making them ideal spots to relax with a drink and dissect the day's round. The restaurant serves a menu that works well for post-round meals, with a range that covers everything from hearty options to lighter choices. The bar is well stocked and offers a comfortable, sociable space where groups can gather without feeling cramped or rushed.

For golfers travelling as part of a larger group or society, the mix of room types and interconnecting options makes organising accommodation straightforward. Twin rooms are perfect for friends sharing, doubles suit couples and the interconnecting rooms work well for families or groups who want to stay close together. The suite offers a touch more luxury for captains, competition winners or anyone treating themselves to something special.

Great venue, well looked after, the long wet season meant the courses were a bit boggy in places but playable, greens had not suffered. Overall not a bad weekend at all.

Three excellent 9 holes courses. Hotel comfortable and food a good standard. Another great trip arranged by YGT

Excellent service, superb staff and very good rooms, the only negative point being the width of the single beds (narrow for most reasonably built men). The breakfast was very good and the evening meals, whilst very well presented, were very limited in choice but overall, my group was very impressed.

Clean large comfortable rooms. Hotel would have scored five stars if after golf facilities were more available. Only one small snooker/pool table to entertain our group throughout the evenings. Swimming pool would be a great investment for this venue.

The hotel upgraded me and my room mate to a suite - always the best way to treat the organiser! This was luxurious, and feedback from others in our group was also very good. Very pleasant bar area with good value food.

We had a very enjoyable stay. the staff and facilities were 1st rate. Drink and snack prices were slightly punchy but considering the area acceptable.

Rooms, service and quality of food excellent. However I didn't pick up in the small print only a 2 course meal. Had to have starter & main and pay extra £5 for a dessert. Also the restaurant was at the clubhouse. Fine if a dry evening, not so good if cold and raining.

The hotel is ideal for a short golf break. The rooms were large, well appointed and very smart - no bath but the shower was excellent. There is a small gym but no other facilities. The evening meal was super and extremely well organised with no one having to wait very long for their meal and the quality of the food and snacks was excellent.

This was an absolute pleasure, beautifully appointed rooms, clean& tidy with a fantastic bed and shower room. We all slept very well here. The food was great, service good and value for money. Drinks were reasonably priced too. The sympathetic new architecture perfectly compliments the existing old clock house building creating a great vista. The overall feeling was very relaxing.

This was my fourth visit to Sandford Springs, this time with a party of forty. I was very nervous of keeping that many happy. Not a problem. No one could fine ant faults to speak of. Food, rooms, staff were all rated very highly. The courses,3x9holes, were also highly recommended by both low and high handicappers. One gentlemen said he go as far as to say it was his most enjoyable holiday ever!

Apart from the weather on the final day, which is obviously out of everyone's control, our trip to Sanford Springs was a great success.

Our group consists of a wide range of handicaps, from single figures to mid twenties, but all were catered for with three 9 hole loops, each with different characteristics. The condition of all three courses was excellent, with undulating fairways and greens to test any level of golfer.

The staff throughout the complex were very welcoming and helpful, providing polite and quality service during our stay.

The only thing lacking was thelack of additional leisure facilities, such as swimming pool, sauna and in the bar area, pool/snooker table etc...

The hotel was exceptionally clean and the rooms were very well equipped. The food was excellent too, with a varied choice for both the evening meal and the breakfast.

Overall the consensus of the whole group was that this is a great venue and one we would all happily return to at some point in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank you and YGT for the professional approach to helping people like myself in organising golf trips for groups of varying abilities and making the experience as easy as possible.
