ONA Valle Romano Golf and Resort

Valle Romano is an excellent location for a golf holiday to the Costa del Sol, pairing an on-site 18-hole course with roomy, self-catering apartments just outside Estepona. You're five minutes from town, around eight minutes from the beach by car and roughly 20 minutes from Marbella when you fancy a bigger night out.

Estepona is a great base if your group likes to mix golf with proper food and a bit of atmosphere. There's a long stretch of coastline, a lively marina and plenty of places to eat and drink without feeling too "all-inclusive resort". The big win here is convenience. The course is right on the doorstep, the apartments give you space to spread out and the Costa del Sol's wider golf scene is close enough that you can easily add a couple of marquee rounds nearby.

If you're building a Costa del Sol break and want guaranteed golf with minimal faff, Valle Romano is a cracking starting point. It works particularly well for groups who want flexibility on meals and timings, with the option to self-cater when it suits and head out when it doesn't.

Who is this for?

Golfers who want a Costa del Sol base with an on-site course, self-catering freedom and quick access to Estepona and Marbella.

Who is it best for?

Two-couple shares and small groups who want space, a terrace for downtime and easy logistics, plus families who'll use the pool and kids' club between rounds.

Valle Romano

This impressive course was designed by the famous Cabell Robinson, (Finca Cortesin, La Cala, La Reserva and many more) and enjoys a quite superb location between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains.

The course is around 6,900 yards off the yellow tees and was designed with European Tour events in mind, but it can be enjoyed by players of all levels thanks to five different tee positions. The greens are generous with many putting surfaces featuring gentle but long slopes and large number of flag positions, designed to provide each hole with a variety of flag positions.

The fairways are generous and forgiving and the greens have gentle long slopes and offer a large number of flag positions, designed so that each hole on the course can made easier or more difficult depending on how the course is set up on the day.

The clubhouse sits high on the hillside and enjoys panoramic vistas over the course. It offers a wide range of delicious dishes inspired by the best cuisine from the Costa del Sol region and complemented by a substantial wine list.

There is a well stocked pro shop with the resort offering lots of other facilities such as pools, tennis courts, gymnasium, Spa, 11-a-side and 7-a-side football fields, shops and restaurants. To make you feel at home and help you relax after a tiring day of golf, the Clubhouse contains the full range of facilities. The exclusive changing rooms have lockers, showers and saunas and these are available to members and players. There's also a club storage room, where bags can be kept, and buggies are available for hire.

Accommodation at ONA Valle Romano Golf and Resort

Valle Romano has 430 spacious apartments, all with golf course views and a large terrace that's ideal for a quiet beer after your round. It's a practical set-up for golf groups, families and couples who want more space than a standard hotel room and the option to self-cater when it suits.

Apartments come with two bedrooms (one double and one twin) and two bathrooms, plus a fully equipped kitchen and Wi-Fi throughout. Decor is modern and neutral, so it feels bright and easy rather than flashy. The layout works particularly well for families or two couples sharing, and the terraces are big enough to actually use rather than just look at.

On site you've got a shared swimming pool, a fully equipped gym and a children's club with activities for different ages. When you don't fancy cooking, the clubhouse offers relaxed food and drinks with views towards the 9th and 18th holes, which makes it an easy meet-up point for the group. It's not fine dining, but it's perfectly decent tapas-style fare and it saves you the hassle of driving into town if you've had a long day on the course.

The apartments are well suited to golfers who want the freedom of self-catering without sacrificing comfort or access to resort amenities. The two-bedroom layout gives everyone a bit of breathing room, and having a proper kitchen means you can sort breakfast at your own pace rather than queuing for a hotel buffet. The terraces are a genuine bonus, especially if you're the type who likes to sit outside with a drink and talk through the round.

Location-wise, you're five minutes from Estepona, around eight minutes to the beach by car and 20 minutes to Marbella. That gives you plenty of options for dinner, a marina stroll or a late one, while still keeping the golf simple in the mornings. The on-site course surrounds the accommodation, so you can roll out of bed, grab a coffee and be on the first tee without any drama. If you're planning to play other courses in the area, most of the big names are within a 30-minute drive, which keeps logistics straightforward for a week-long trip.

On September 2018, we stayed at OnaValle, and we felt the quality was good, and that's why we went there again. The room facility was excellent for us.
