Delta Hotels by Marriott Worsley Park Country Club

Delta Hotels by Marriott Worsley Park Country Club is a smart pick for a Manchester golf break, giving you a proper parkland course on a peaceful estate setting with the city's bars and restaurants a short drive away. If your group likes to mix 18 holes with a lively evening, you can play by day and still make the most of hotspots like Deansgate and the Northern Quarter without the trip turning into a logistics exercise.

Golf-wise, Worsley Park is a thinking player's track. At 6,611 yards from the championship tees it's not built to bully you with length, but it does reward position and discipline, with natural undulations, mature trees and water hazards shaping the strategy. European Golf Design, working alongside Michael King, has created a layout where course management matters more than raw power. The course hosted a European Challenge Tour event in 2004 and has continued to evolve since, with improvements that have only sharpened the test.

Practice facilities are solid too, with a 250-metre driving range built to USGA specifications and putting greens for a proper warm-up before you head to the 1st. Set within 200 acres of what was once the Duke of Bridgewater's private estate, the venue has history baked into the landscape. The course has matured beautifully, blending into its surroundings in a way that makes it feel like it's been here far longer than it has. Ryan Giggs and Sir Alex Ferguson have previously hosted charity golf days here, which tells you something about the quality of the venue and its standing in the local area.

Who is this for? Golfers who want an easy Manchester base with a genuine parkland test on-site and plenty of options once the clubs are back in the boot.

Who is it best for? Mid-handicappers who enjoy plotting their way round, society groups with mixed abilities and anyone who wants golf, spa time and a proper city night out in one trip.

Worsley Park Golf Club

Worsley Park is a strategic parkland layout by European Golf Design in collaboration with Michael King. At 6,611 yards from the championship tees, it's not a brute, but it will punish lazy lines. Trees tighten driving corridors in places and water is positioned to catch the over-confident swing, so your best weapon is usually judgement rather than horsepower. I'm a bit of a sucker for parkland courses that make you hit the right shot, not just the long one, and Worsley Park fits that bill.

The course hosted a European Challenge Tour event in 2004 and has been refined since, with the estate's natural movement used well to create variety. The existing features of the Duke of Bridgewater's former estate have been woven into the design, so you're playing through genuine parkland rather than something that's been artificially shaped. That sense of place makes a difference, especially when you're navigating the tighter, tree-lined holes where accuracy off the tee is everything. The natural undulations add interest without being unfair, and the greens are well protected, so you'll need to be sharp with your approach shots and confident with the putter.

If you're travelling as a mixed-ability group, it's the kind of course where higher handicappers can still get round and enjoy it, while better players have plenty to think about when chasing a score. Water comes into play on several holes, and the bunkering is positioned to make you think twice about your line. It's not a course that beats you up, but it does ask questions, and the answers aren't always obvious until you've played it a couple of times.

Before you head out, the 250-metre range, built to USGA spec, and putting greens are well worth using, especially if you've travelled in that day and want to find a rhythm early. The practice facilities are proper, not an afterthought, and you'll see plenty of golfers using them to dial in their game before they tee off or work out what went wrong afterwards. It's that kind of course, one that rewards preparation and punishes complacency, and that's exactly what makes it worth playing.

Accommodation at Delta Hotels by Marriott Worsley Park Country Club

The on-site hotel has 158 rooms and works well for golf groups because it's geared for short stays and early starts. Rooms are spacious, modern and comfortable rather than flashy, ideal when you just want a clean, quiet base after 18 holes or a day exploring Manchester. Expect the usual Marriott standards, including fast Wi-Fi, satellite TV and plenty of space to sort your kit out for the next day. Nothing over the top, just well-thought-out spaces where you can unwind properly.

Set in 200 acres of the Duke of Bridgewater's former estate, it feels tucked away once you arrive, but it's still handy for the M60 which makes arrivals, departures and evening trips into Manchester straightforward. That balance makes Worsley Park one of the smarter choices in the region, especially if you want easy access to both golf and the wider motorway network for day trips or onward travel. You're never far from greenery even when you're indoors, and the peaceful setting feels a world away from the city despite being only a short drive from the centre.

For groups, the hotel handles the practicalities well. There's ample parking on-site, which matters when you're travelling with clubs and kit, and the layout makes it easy to gather before heading out or regroup after your round. Breakfast at Tempo is popular with guests for a reason, it's a reliable start before an early tee time, and the kitchen knows how to fuel golfers properly. If you're planning a society trip or a weekend with mates, the hotel can accommodate larger groups without feeling cramped, and the staff are used to managing golf bookings with multiple tee times and varying check-in schedules.

The rooms themselves are designed with both leisure and business travellers in mind, but it's the golfers who benefit most. You'll find enough space to lay out your gear, charge devices and settle in without tripping over your bag every time you move. The beds are comfortable, the showers are strong and the blackout curtains actually work, which matters if you've had a late one in town and need to be sharp for a morning round. It's the kind of place where everything just works, and that's exactly what you want when golf is the main event.

Cast Iron Grill is the main restaurant, focusing on regional produce in a contemporary setting. The menu changes with the seasons and the kitchen knows how to treat good ingredients, so it's worth booking a table if you're staying over and want a proper meal after your round. Tempo is the reliable breakfast stop before a tee time and does simple lunch options for the turn-around between rounds, great sandwiches and quick service if you're grabbing something between 18 holes. Brew Bar Lounge is the relaxed choice for afternoon tea or a cocktail while you replay the best and worst swings of the day. It's the kind of spot where you can settle in with a pint and let the post-round analysis run its course.

The leisure club includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and whirlpool. There's also a well-equipped gym with cardio machines and free weights if you want to keep up with your routine or work off the breakfast buffet. For full switch-off mode, Spa of Senses offers massages, facials, scrubs and wraps alongside manicure and pedicure treatments. It's a superb complex that adds real value if you're travelling with non-golfers or just fancy a bit of recovery time between rounds.

If the weather turns, the Worsley Park Simulator Lounge adds an indoor option with Trackman technology, plus food, drinks and live sport. Needless to say, it's dangerous for competitive mates. You can play world-class courses without stepping outside, and the setup is proper, not just a gimmick. It's a smart addition that means you're never stuck for something to do, even if the rain sets in.

Very enjoyable Sunday Saver. Fantastic hotel. All the ladies in my group thought the hotel was first class with accommodation, the food, the staff, and the bonus of the hotel being just two minutes from the motorway. We have been going on these trips for many years now and that was by far the best hotel we have stayed at.

Our stay at Worsley Park was very good. the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was also very good. Having said that we never received our £200 to spend in resort, we were given vouchers for 20% off at the bar instead.

Had a fabulous night with eight friends. The rooms were lovely and spacious, the food was lovely and the waiting staff were very attentive. The reception staff were very helpful except for one who shouted at us, her customer service skills need to be improved as she definitely let the team down.
