The Kendleshire

The Kendleshire is a resort-style parkland course in South Gloucestershire, designed by Adrian Stiff, the same man behind the nearby Players Club. It sits on gently rolling farmland and, while it's not the longest card you'll ever see, it's a proper golf course that makes you think from the tee.

You'll generally find fairways that look inviting, then a few well-placed bunkers and the odd splash of water waiting to catch the lazy line. The front nine eases you in with scoring chances if you're sensible, then asks a bit more as you turn for home. On the back nine the strongest holes come thick and fast and, in my opinion, it's the stretch late on that gives the course its character.

It's a good fit for mixed-ability groups because you can plot your way round without feeling bullied, but you still have to earn your score. Miss the fairway in the wrong place and you'll be scrambling, and the greens tend to have enough movement to keep you honest.

Off the course, the clubhouse is relaxed and welcoming, with a bar and food looking out towards the finishing hole. There's also a driving range and short-game areas, handy if you like a proper warm-up before you peg it up.

If you're putting together a Bristol golf break, The Kendleshire is an easy one to include alongside other local favourites.

The Kendleshire

The club is home to 27 superbly conditioned holes that are the equal of anything in the Bristol locale, with the most recently added nine holes being formulated by the great Peter McEvoy. The Hollows, The Ruffet and The Badminton are the three loops at the Kendleshire, which has hosted numerous PGA Europro Tour events since its inception. Water affects no less than 18 of the club's holes, helping to add great drama, suspense and challenge.

The Kendleshire was named one of Britain's ten best new courses in 1999, and since then has matured nicely into one of the finest in the south of England, making it an essential part of a good Bristol golf tour.

Many new courses have created a homage to Sawgrass' famous 17th hole - the island green at the Kendleshire's 11th may be one of the best efforts.
