Monifieth Golf Links

Monifieth Golf Links is an easy shout if you're basing yourself around Carnoustie or St Andrews, it's about 30 minutes from the Old Course and even closer to the Angus coast. You get two proper tests on one site, the Medal and the Ashludie, both mixing links golf with a touch of heathland feel thanks to gorse, heather and some sheltered stretches inland.

The Medal Course has genuine pedigree. The R&A used it for final qualifying ahead of The Open at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007, which is a strong marker of the standard of golf and the condition you can expect. It's a course that asks for sensible shot choices, especially when the wind gets up, and you'll be rewarded for keeping the ball in play and thinking your way round rather than trying to overpower it.

There's a nice bit of history here too. Tom Watson had his first links experience at Monifieth before going on to win The Open, and it's not hard to see why this corner of Scotland gets under golfers' skin. Both courses are kept in excellent shape through the year, so it works well as a flexible add-on if you're stitching together a multi-course trip.

If you fancy 36 holes without changing hotels, or you want quality links golf beyond the headline names, Monifieth is well worth pencilling in. Include Monifieth Golf Links on your next Scottish golf break and you'll get variety, value and a proper test.

The course has recent been subject to a development programme, under the stewardship of the head greenkeeper, so visitors can now expect excellent conditioning and quality greens. The neighbouring Ashludie Course may be short, but designer James Braid's subtleties mean strategy is all important to score well.

Monifieth is well worth the stop en-route North from St Andrews to Carnoustie.

Monifieth is renowned for it's strategically positioned bunkers, firm & true greens, making it an extreme test of links golf especially when the wind is gusting from the Firth of Tay. There are challenging holes, particularly the fourth in terms of length - at 456 yards, it is essential that your tee shot is down the fairway in order to avoid dropping shots.
