Panmure Golf Club

It was at Panmure Golf Club in 1953 that Ben Hogan set up camp for the Open at Carnoustie, his only appearance in the Championship. He spent a fortnight getting to grips with the local turf and the demands of proper links golf, then went on to win by four shots, signing off with a course-record 68 in the final round.

And yes, Panmure leans into the story. Rumour has it Hogan even had the 17th green cut to his own liking, then returned the mower to the head greenkeeper, spotless. Whether every detail is true or not, you can see why the tale has stuck. This is classic Angus links ground, firm underfoot and asking you to think your way round rather than simply lash driver.

If you're touring the big names on this stretch of coast, Panmure is an easy add-on. It's only a few miles south of Carnoustie and it has that championship feel without trying too hard. The routing is traditional, the bunkering is there for a reason and when the wind gets up, you quickly learn where the sensible side of the fairway is.

Right, the key point is this: Panmure is the sort of place serious golfers have always rated, long before it needed to market itself. If Carnoustie is on your itinerary, I'd seriously consider slotting Panmure in alongside it.

Who is this for?
Golfers building an Angus itinerary around Carnoustie who want another authentic links day with proper heritage and a straightforward run from town.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy strategy off the tee and controlling flight in the wind. Mid to low handicaps will get the most out of it, but any golfer who loves old-school links terrain will appreciate Panmure.

Panmure Golf Club

A regular choice for Open final qualifying, Hogan fell in love with Panmure, and was reportedly particularly impressed with the positioning of a devilish pot-bunker in front of the sixth green. The members appreciated his praise so much that the trap has been known as ‘Hogan's Bunker' ever since. With a look and feel of many traditional links courses mixed in with some tree and heather lined holes which wouldn't be out of place at the likes of Woodhall Spa or The Berkshire, Panmure is a fantastic experience and a well deserved recipient of the title of hidden gem

This par-70 layout was laid out by five-time Open Champion James Braid and has hosted a wide variety of regional and national professional and amateur competitions. Although the course gets off to a slow start with a short par-4 1st hole and relatively straight forward par-5 2nd it is straight into an excellent par-4 on the 3rd hole aptly named Pines. This dog leg hole has bunkers protecting the left hand side of the fairway and large Pine trees on the right hand side, those finding the fairway are left with a mid to long iron into a green which is protected by another two bunkers.

The 6th hole is considered one of the finest on the course, the reality is this 414 yard par-4 is one of the finest in the world. With an accurate drive required to find the banked fairway and a perfectly hit approach needed to reach the elevated green, anyone walking off with a par is sure to gain a shot or two on their playing partners.

After golf it is well worth enjoying some refreshments in the clubhouse, you'll be met with a warm welcome and a bar boasting a rich history of clippings from tournaments of yesteryear featuring well known professionals as well showcasing the club's heritage which dates back to 1845. The clubhouse itself was modelled on Royal Calcutta Golf Club, a link which is shown not only in design but also by a large painting of Royal Calcutta's Golf Club which is located in the dining room.

Located just a short distance from Carnoustie Golf Club, the city of Dundee and just over an hour from Edinburgh airport, Panmure is a must play for anyone visiting this area of Scotland.
