Parkstone Golf Club

Parkstone was originally laid out by two-time Open Champion Willie Park Jnr and opened for play in 1909. It's been refined over the years, but the big moment came in 1937 when James Braid reworked the routing into the strong, strategic test visitors still love today.

Reg Whitcombe, the 1938 Open Champion, summed it up neatly: 'There is no better place.' Big praise, but spend a day here and you'll see why Parkstone is so often talked about as Dorset's standout.

Set on sandy, gently rolling ground in the Luscombe Valley, it has a lovely heathland feel. Expect pine-framed holes, plenty of heather and a proper sense of place, plus a few glimpses out towards Poole Harbour and Poole Bay when the trees open up.

Underfoot, it's classic heathland: firm, springy turf that rewards a low, chasing ball when conditions are dry. The heather is the headline hazard, but it's the angles that really bite. Take the wrong side of the fairway and you'll be playing in over trouble to greens that don't give you much for free. It's a straightforward walk, too, and a great shout in shoulder seasons when the South Coast drains well.

It's also an easy win for logistics. You're just outside Poole, close to Bournemouth and within easy reach of other top local picks. If you're building a golf tour in the Bournemouth area, Parkstone is the sort of course that gives your itinerary a bit of pedigree.

Who is this for? Anyone who fancies a proper South Coast heathland test with a bit of history behind it. It works brilliantly for societies staying in Bournemouth or Poole, straightforward to get to and reliably in good nick when you're trying to stack a tour with minimal fuss.

Who is it best for? Golfers who like strategy off the tee and don't mind being asked to hit their spots. If you're a mid to low handicapper you'll appreciate the design, but any golfer will enjoy it if you play sensibly and keep it out of the heather.

Parkstone Golf Club

The fact that Parkstone is now regarded as one of the South Coast's best courses is credit to James Braid, one of the most prolific golf course designers in British history. The Scot, who also lifted the Claret Jug on five occasions, revised Parkstone's layout in 1937 and what you get is a course that still feels properly relevant, even by today's standards.

The sandy, free-draining turf is a big part of the fun here. When it's running, Parkstone feels lively underfoot and you'll get plenty of chase on well-struck tee shots. The undulating terrain adds variety and interest, with several holes offering elevated tee shots and views across the Luscombe Valley towards Poole Harbour.

Towering pines frame the fairways, while heather runs throughout, giving the course a distinctly rugged heathland character. Strategic bunkering, firm greens and the ever-present heather mean accuracy off the tee is rewarded, while wayward shots are punished. Worth packing plenty of balls if your miss is right or left into the heather.

Braid's routing makes excellent use of the natural contours and the club has worked hard to restore the heathland landscape by removing invasive trees and scrub. The result is a course that still carries that classic 1930s Braid feel, helped by the recent heathland restoration work.

Parkstone is an essential component of any good Bournemouth golf tour and it sits alongside the region's other top courses. The club's affiliation with golfing greats, from Peter Alliss (who was head professional in the 1960s and held the course record for many years) to 2018 Women's British Open champion Georgia Hall (who joined in 2012 and is still an Honorary Member), speaks to the quality of what's on offer.

When planning to play golf courses in Dorset, make sure to include Parkstone Golf Club along with the likes of Ferndown Golf Club, Isle of Purbeck Golf Club, Queens Park Golf Club and the Club at Meyrick Park.
