Royal Belfast Golf Club

Royal Belfast Golf Club was established in 1881 after local man Thomas Sinclair came back from St Andrews determined to bring the game to his hometown. It's one of Ireland's oldest clubs, but it's not remotely stuffy. Better still for a short break, it's only 15 minutes from Belfast International Airport, so you can land and be on the 1st tee without losing half the day to transfers.

The Harry Colt design is classic parkland: mature, tree-lined fairways, gentle movement in the land and greens that reward good iron play and a tidy short game. This is not a place to just lash driver everywhere. Plot your way round, pick smart targets and you will score. Colt's routing feels nicely varied, with holes turning you in different directions and asking different shapes off the tee. Water comes into play on a couple of holes when you get greedy, and the bunkering is positioned to catch anything loose into the corners.

It more than earns its reputation as one of Northern Ireland's top golf courses. When conditions are right, the greens roll beautifully and the tree-lined corridors mean accuracy is rewarded over distance. If you're building a Belfast-based itinerary, Royal Belfast is a superb parkland counterpoint to the big links names nearby.

Who is it best for? Mid to low handicappers who value course management and accuracy, groups combining Royal Belfast with nearby links courses for variety and anyone seeking a genuine Harry Colt layout without the premium green fees of more famous venues.

Royal Belfast Golf Club

The course is now one of only four in Ireland to be honoured with the ‘Royal' title.

Royal Belfast as it is now is based on the 1925 layout conceived by Harry S. Colt, and is set in a fantastic location, with unrivalled views of Belfast Lough and the Antrim plateau above. Arguably the finest hole on the golf course is the 415-yard opening hole, a challenging uphill par-4 which dog-legs to the left.

Royal Belfast is also fortunate to have an amazing clubhouse; built to serve as a private home for a Belfast linen manufacturer in 1852, the magnificent construction has been modernised to serve as a clubhouse, and is one of the luxurious around.
