Irvine Bogside Golf Club

Laid out by James Braid in 1926, Irvine Bogside still feels very true to the original design. It's not as long as some of its fellow Open Qualifying venues in Ayrshire but don't confuse yardage with an easy day. Like plenty of Braid courses, it's all about hitting your spots and thinking your way round.

Off the tee you'll find narrow corridors framed by mature trees, so accuracy matters more than swinging out of your shoes. The greens are on the smaller side with subtle breaks, which puts a premium on approach play and leaving yourself the right angles. Get out of position and you can quickly be pitching out, hacking from rough or scrambling from awkward lies.

The routing moves nicely across gently rolling ground and it's a proper test of ball-striking and patience, especially if you're trying to chase flags when you shouldn't. If you enjoy traditional Scottish parkland golf and you're happy to plot your way round rather than overpower it, Bogside is a cracking addition to an Ayrshire itinerary.

Who is this for? Golfers after an authentic James Braid parkland test in Ayrshire, societies and groups who enjoy a fair but demanding round and anyone building a multi-course trip in the area.

Who is it best for? Mid-to-low handicappers who value accuracy off the tee, traditionalists who like classic course architecture and visitors who want variety alongside Ayrshire's bigger-name links.
