Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club

Prestwick St Nicholas sits on the shores of the Firth of Clyde and, while it's surrounded by some of Ayrshire's headline names, it's far more than a warm-up act. This is a proper links that's often billed as a "miniature championship course". It's only par 69 and it won't look long on the card, but it asks proper questions from the first tee.

Expect blind tee shots, smartly placed bunkers and the sort of coastal breeze that turns a straightforward yardage into a proper decision. If you enjoy shaping it, flighting it down and picking the right side of the fairway, you'll have a great day here. If you try to overpower it, it can bite back quickly.

The course is known for presenting beautifully, with fairways and greens that hold up well across the seasons. Off the course, the clubhouse makes the most of the coastline, so it's a cracking place to regroup after your round and take in the setting.

If you're building an Ayrshire trip, Prestwick St Nicholas is a smart addition. It gives you that authentic links feel and loads of character without the relentless length you'll find at some nearby championship venues. In other words, it's ideal for mixed-ability groups, and still interesting enough to keep the better players fully switched on.

Who is this for? Golfers wanting a genuine Ayrshire links experience with plenty of character and strategy, especially those building a multi-course itinerary along the coast.

Who is it best for? Mixed-ability groups and mid-handicappers looking for a fair but testing links that rewards course management over raw distance.

Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club

Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club is the 26th oldest Golf Club in the world. Its rich heritage includes having Old Tom Morris as a founding member, and the golf course itself has changed little since the club moved to its present site in 1892. Lying between the Glasgow-Ayr railway line and the Firth of Clyde, the course is a traditional links course with firm, sandy turf and gorse-lined fairways.

Though not long – St Nicholas measures a little over 6,000yards – there is no shortage of difficulty; out of bounds is a factor in 12 holes, placing emphasis on accuracy and patience over brute power. This charming course is rounded off by a majestic clubhouse, and is a terrific addition to any golf tour along the Ayrshire coast.
